Symbolism & Meaning
This card shows a figure turning his back on his cups and walking away. His red clothes symbolise passion rooted in the desire to follow through with this plan of action. The crescent moon alongside the sun looking down, represents a connection to the conscious and intuitive self. The staff is also held by the Hermit, a symbol of power and provides much needed support as he embarks on his journey.
How the Eight of Cups is Relevant to Me
This card is a reminder that if we are not happy or fulfilled in our lives, we do not need to settle for this existence. I feel lucky though because many people may not know what is missing, they just have this gnawing feeling and can’t explain it. I know what is missing from my life, I just hope that I can make it happen sooner rather than later. I dream of living on the water, on a narrowboat and cruising the inland waterways. In reality, I will probably need to have a residential mooring but I will still have the simpler life that I crave.
I have said before though that our children are the priority right now. They have no interest in boats, they think I am mad but I don’t care. In the meantime I just have to be prepared to settle here, in Essex. Hindsight tells me we should never have moved here but at the time, we felt under pressure due to our rental home being put up for sale. Even the kids want to move but the timing is just all off. We will make it happen but for now I need to find a way to make peace with being here and just keep things moving in the background.
There will be sacrifices including people, behaviours, objects and places. This shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for me. I am already separate from my family, the only people outside of my husband and children who really matter to me. I have no close friends to speak of. I used to feel like there was something wrong with this but I have come to accept it is just how I am. I am not unsociable, in fact I enjoy being around lots of people. I just don’t feel the need to have the connection that comes from a friendship. Maybe I have just never found the right people or person.
Stuff is just stuff. There are some items I will want to keep but the rest of it can just go. It is all just space filler and holds no value other than to cover a crappy part of a wall or hide a stain on a carpet.
I am searching for deeper meaning in my life and I need to be prepared to let go of all of the things that no longer serve me.
